Truly
2005, Triple channel video installation with sound.

“Truly” is a video installation presented on the occasion of the DESTE Prize exhibition in Athens. The first part shows “Dancing Waters”, a colorful water fountain show at Ayia Napa, Cyprus, which was choreographed and filmed on the rhythm of a pop love song. The second part is the video Arkadaslar. This video diptych belongs to a series of works including the installations “Hug” me and “Desire is irrelevant “, as well as the performances “You make me feel brand new”, “Forever is gonna start tonight” and “Slow Dance Marathon”. All these works circle around the subject of amorous dialectics and the emotional impact of popular music.

DESTE Prize 2005, Jury Announcement

“After careful deliberation over a close field of well deserving finalists, the Jury is pleased to award the 2005 Deste Prize to Christodoulos Panayiotu, an artist who incisively explores the complex interconnections between our most innate desires and their cultural constructions. From fighter planes and fireworks to yesterday’ s confetti and songs whose lyrics we are almost embarrassed to know by heart, Panayiotou crafts concise videos, objects and ephemeral situations that reveal a playful with and an eye for the sex appeal and abstract beauty of our everyday world. At once ironic yet tender, analytic but deeply felt, his work is that of savvy cultural consumer who is not afraid – every now and then – to fall for the very romantic myths and pop productions he so deftly probes.”
